Dr. Mike Jackson
Athletic Coordinator/Head Football Coach


Coach Jackson has 17 years experience as an Athletic Director/Head Football Coach.  Coach Jackson has a career record of 115 wins, 70 losses and 2 ties.  He has taken 4 different schools to the state playoffs (Chavez, Charlotte, St. Pius and St. Paul).  He has taken 3 different schools to the 4th round of the playoffs (Charlotte, St. Pius & St. Paul).  Coach Jackson has 2 State Championships to his credit (1993 St. Pius and 1992 St. Paul). Coach Jackson has been named Coach of the Year numerous times, including the 1992-93 TAPPS Statewide Coach of the Year, 1993 Houston Chronicle Coach of the Year, 1992 & 1993 Toyota State Champion Coach of the Year, 1992 District 2 Coach of the Year, 1994 District 4 Coach of the Year, 1999 District 31 Coach of the Year and he was a finalist for the 1999 San Antonio Express News Coach of the Year.  Coach Jackson also serves as the Vice-President for the Greater Houston Football Coaches Association. He is the Executive Director of the Houston Texans State 7-on-7 Qualifying Tournament, the largest SQT in the State of Texas.  Coach Jackson has a B.A. in Physical Education from St. Edward's University; a M.A. in Athletic Administration from Southwest Texas State; an M.Ed. in Educational Administration from the University of Houston-Victoria and his Ph.D. in Leadership Studies from California Coast University. He was selected as the Head Coach for the White team for the 2010 Space City Classic All-Star Game, which his team won 23-21.  He has been published numerous times in Texas Coach and other athletic periodicals. He is married to his beautiful wife Tracey and has one amazing daughter Mariah.

Kevin Hathaway
Assistant Athletic Coordinator/Quality Control/Running Backs
Coach Hathaway is a 23 year veteran of the coaching profession, with various stops all over the state of Texas.  As well as being a valued member of the English Department at Chavez High School, he is also the Head Coach of the Lady Lobo Softball team and also the Meet Director of the annual East Side Power Lifting Classic held at Chavez each January.  He has served as head coach of many other sports while at various other schools around the state as well including, Track, Power Lifting, Cross Country, Basketball, and Baseball.  Coach Hathaway has experience at all levels of the athletic program from Junior High to High School and has also coached at every level of the UIL state classifications 1A to 5A.  He has also been to the playoffs in several sports including 7 in Football, 3 in Track, 2 in Softball, and once in Cross Country.  He is a graduate of Victoria Stroman High School and has his degree from Sul Ross University. He is engaged to Keysha Roddy and enjoys bow-hunting in his spare time.

Charles Chargois
Defensive Coordinator

Following active duty in the Marine Corps Coach Chargois married wife Janet and started teaching in Beaumont in 1971.  He earned his Master's Degree in Health and Physical Education from Lamar University. He has coached and taught at Beaumont French, South park, Phar-San Juan-Alamo, Magnolia, Channelview, Aldine Middle, Crosby and Chavez.  He is the lead teacher in the World History Department.  Coach Chargois has three adult children and plans to retire from HISD after three more football seasons.

Larkay James
Passing Coordinator/Receivers
Coach James, a former player and graduate of the University of Houston, is starting his 8th year of coaching Class 5A football. Coach James played wide receiver for the University of Houston from 1991-1995 and caught the last touchdown recorded in the history of the Southwest Conference. Coach James was the receivers coach at Bellaire High School for 4 yrs before joining the Lobo staff in 2006 as the Passing Co-Ord/WR coach. Coach James has been blessed to make the Texas 5A State playoffs 5 of his 7 yrs of coaching. He is also the Offensive Coordinator the Houston Cyclones. Coach James also coaches girls basketball and boys and girls track. Coach James has made the playoffs 2 times in basketball, and taken teams to the regional track meet 3 times throughout his career. Coach James is the proud father of two gifted sons, Richard Mark and Julian Maddox James.

Robert Deanda
Defensive Line

Coach Deanda works with the defensive line, along with running the JV Defense in the Lobo Football program. As a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, he is the assistant strength and conditioning coach for the football program at Chavez. He also serves as the Head Boy's Wrestling and Powerlifting Coach, along with organizing and teaching the Sports Medicine program.   Coach Deanda is in his second year of coaching with the Lobos. He is native of Houston, and a 2004 graduate of Texas Lutheran University. At Texas Lutheran University he attained a degree in Kinesiology while playing football for the Bulldogs.

Marion Gay Jr.
Freshman Football

Coach Gay is a 19 year veteran of the coaching profession, with various schools in HISD, as well as being a valued member of the P.E. department here at Chavez High School. He has coached at both 4A-5A High School and also Junior High, where he won several Zone Titles. He played football, baseball, basketball, and ran track for  now a middle school Abraham Lincoln High School here in Houston’s fourth ward. Coach Gay is a native Houstonian and the forth child of fifteen children. He holds Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education with a minor in Elementary Education from Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas. 

Tony Frisbee
Freshman Football

Tony is a second year teacher at Chavez and teaches Chemistry.  He was an All-State athlete in Ohio in football (WR/DB) and track.  He is assisting with the freshman football program.

Wes Speights
Athletic Trainer

Matthew Wamble
Academic Coach

Coach Wamble has 8 years of coaching experience in Fort Bend ISD.  He has coached at the Middle School and High School levels, most recently at Elkins High School.  He received his B.S. from Texas State University in Exercise Sports Science with a minor in Education.  he is married to his wife Lori and has two beautiful girls, Hannah and Peyton.


Mike Janes
Run Game Coordinator/Offensive Line

Michael Janes is a native of San Antonio, Texas.  He has been in the teaching and coaching profession for 8 years with stops in Stockdale, Milby and Chavez High School. Michael earned degrees in History and Exercise Science in college. While at Texas Lutheran, Michael played football and was a member of the fraternity Kappa Pi Alpha and other clubs. Michael has coached several sports other than football, such as baseball, both boys and girls track, basketball and softball. Coach Janes is the power lifting coach for both the men’s and women’s teams at Chavez.  In addition he and Coach Deanda head up the Lobo Strength Program.
Mark Martinez
Freshman Football

Coach Martinez has 7 years experience in the coaching profession. Coach Martinez has previously worked at Manvel, Junior High and High School in 2007 where he helped the Junior Varsity to a 7-3 record.  He graduated from Dobie High School in 2000 and was an athlete all four years.  In his senior season the Dobie football team was ranked #1 in the Greater Houston Area and 7th in the State.  He received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Kinesiology- Sports Administration in 2006. This is his first year in HISD; he is currently teaching at Hogg Middle School.

Steve Ortiz
Freshman Football

 Coach Ortiz brings 27 years of teaching and coaching experience to Chavez High after coming over from Sam Rayburn High.  He graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1982 with a degree in PE and a minor in History.  Coach Ortiz has coached every level of football and basketball from 7th grade to Varsity.  he is presently the Head Girl's Basketball Coach at Chavez and led the Lady Lobos to their first playoff appearance in school history in 2008-09 to go along with the best record in school history (23-9).  Coach Ortiz has been married to his wife Liz, a middle school principal in Pasadena ISD for 28 years and they have two children, Adam (25) and Emily (21).  He also teaches US History at Chavez.


Nick Flores
Linebackers
Nick is the Linebackers coach and Head baseball coach at Chavez.  he works in the Special Ed Department.  Nick has several years experience in South Texas coaching for such programs as Corpus Christi Calallen, LaFeria and San Benito.

Diahron Myers
Statistician
 

Diahron has worked with the Lobo staff for the past 4 years, donating his time on gamedays as the statistician.
